Psoriasis is an ongoing inflammatory autoimmune disease that can flare up at times. This is when symptoms like itchy, painful skin patches (called “plaques”) become worse or spread. Psoriasis results from a rapid turnover of skin cells. This causes a build-up of cells that look like patches.
While it’s a health condition caused by an abnormal gene, symptom flares can be triggered by things like a skin injury, stress, weather changes, or lifestyle habits like drinking alcohol. You cannot give it to someone else (i.e., it is not contagious). Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis and is defined by raised skin patches.
Symptoms can include:
- Thick red raised patches of skin with silvery scales that may itch, burn or bleed.
- These patches typically develop evenly on both sides of the body; usually on the scalp, lower back, elbows or knees.
- Changes to finger/toe nails like pitting.
While treatments exist, including oral medicines, they tend not to work as well as injectable medications. Yet some people prefer to take medicine by mouth, so safe oral treatments that work well long-term remain an unmet need. For this reason, new medicines are vital, and studies like this one are how we develop them.
If you have been diagnosed with plaque psoriasis, you may qualify to participate in a research study that is enrolling now.
You may qualify if you:
- Are 18 to 65 years old
- Have plaque psoriasis that has been stable with no major flares for 6 months
- Have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, often defined as 10 percent or more of your body affected; the study doctor will confirm using standard tools
- Have basic blood and urine tests in the normal range
- Do not have health issues that would interfere with study visits, as determined by the study doctor

How the Study Works
The main goal of the study is to see whether the investigational medication is safe and can help improve disease severity (e.g., improve the skin's appearance and reduce the size of the areas that are affected). This oral investigational medication will be compared to placebo (a tablet or pill with no medicine in it). By "investigational," we mean that it is not currently approved to treat plaque psoriasis.
